What does being "financially healthy" mean to you?

I believe being financially healthy is to be in a position to pursue one’s happiness. There is an element of financial security for food, health, housing, and other core needs. And also, saving and positioning so that someone can live out their passions on their own accord. In a world where finances are so determinative, financial health is vital towards self-actualization and our whole well-being.

What motivates you to be financially healthy?

I’m motivated by a desire to live a life on my own terms, to be able to weather the uncertainty of life, and do so without the nasty feeling of being financially unhealthy. Frankly, being financially unhealthy is not fun (it’s also why we have to motivate systemic change so that more people have the opportunity to have financial health) and I don’t want it again for myself or for my tribe of friends and family.

What is one of your main financial goals right now, and why?

One of my main financial goals is to buy a house. I’ve always been enamored with home construction and the idea that homeownership is a formative quality of the American Dream. Particularly as a younger African-American man, I’m among the least likely populations in the United States to own a home. Now I don’t if homeownership “works” for my aspirations and lifestyle. I hope to learn more about financial health in a way that would clarify and align my goals.
